Goals >> Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
Target 5: Reduce by two thirds the mortality rate among children under five.
11 million children under five die every year from preventable illnesses like neonatal problems, respiratory infections, diarrhea and malaria, among others. More than half are related to cases of malnutrition.
Between 1960 and 1990, child mortality rate dropped by 50% and during the 1990's it went on decreasing, but not at the necessary rhythm to achieve the Goal by 2015. The region which has experienced the least progress has been sub-Saharan Africa.
