Farmacčutics Mundi and Medicus Mundi Catalunya, with the support of the Catalan Development Cooperation Agency, present the awareness campaign: “Health in the Millennium, a missing signature”, which

STATES:

- That, despite medical progress in recent years, there are areas in the planet where health is still not a right that everyone can attain.

- That the implementation of projects and initiatives on the part of Development NGOs, Foundations and other institutions have been important in the advance toward the right to health, but not sufficient.

- That the eight Millennium Development Goals established at the Millennium Summit in the year 2000 are the result of a global answer to global injustice.

- That, in order to attain the Goals by 2015, the implication of civil society, administrations and the private sector as key and indispensable actors is necessary.

- That, while impoverished countries dedicate their efforts to accomplishing the first seven Goals, developed countries have to work in order to attain the eighth Goal, encouraging a global association for development.

FOR ALL THESE REASONS, WE DEMAND:

1. That our relevant authorities respect the agreements they committed themselves to at the Millennium Summit and that these not be a mere statement of good intentions.

2. That, both the Spanish and the Catalan governments, dedicate 0.7% of the GNP to Official Development Assistance and that this assistance be managed in a transparent and non-refundable way.

3. That external debt be cancelled and those resources be dedicated to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

4. That Development Cooperation Aid policies match the guidelines established by the United Nations Work Groups and that they take under consideration priority countries and areas.

5. That health Aid not be far from the 21-23% established by experts and that it be used as an effective strategy to improve primary healthcare in developing countries.

6. That Development Aid promote access to sexual and reproductive health services.

7. That the government pressure the World Trade Organization to keep the agreements reached in Doha, so that international trade measures deal with public health problems, promote the development of new drugs and guarantee access to essential drugs.
